Playground Inspections
Playgrounds are an essential element of child development and education. The State of California requires that all public playgrounds meet the Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC) guidelines and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. To keep playgrounds safe and to meet state regulations, SIA has tools available to assist our member districts with inspections and maintenance.
Playground Initial Inspection All public
playgrounds in the State of California are to be inspected by a certified
playground inspector after installation or alteration. This initial inspection checklist is a useful tool for the Certified Inspector and is to be used in conjunction with the Playground Guidelines.
Playground Guidelines: A Guide to the Initial Inspection This useful booklet can be used with the Initial Inspection checklist. It provides brief narratives of the various elements that are to be inspected during the initial inspection.
High & Low Frequency Inspection Worksheet This worksheet weighs the most common use, materials and environmental factors that will assist you in determining the frequency of your playground inspections and maintenance.
Low Frequency Inspection Form Use this checklist to conduct your low frequency inspections. This form can be downloaded and adapted for each playground.
High Frequency Inspection Form Use this checklist to conduct your high frequency inspections. This form can be downloaded and adapted for each playground.
Playground signage:
School
playgrounds are often available for use by the public during non-school
hours. These labels were designed to help the public use your equipment
safely. The labels indicate the appropriate age range of the user,
suggestions for safe play and direction for adult supervision and concerns.
Each label is 5 x 7 inches and can be affixed directly onto the equipment.
There are three age range options: 2 to 5 years, 5 to 12 years and 2 to 12
years. Select the label that is most appropriate for the design of your
equipment.
